Introduction to the key points of welding Hastelloy pipe

Key Points to Consider When Welding Hastelloy Pipes

Welding Hastelloy pipes requires careful attention to detail and adherence to specific procedures due to the material's unique properties. Here are some essential tips to ensure a successful weld:

1. Before starting the welding process, check the area around the groove. If there is any white tape on the bottom or sides of the groove, it should be removed and reversed. If not, clean the area with acetone to remove any contaminants that could affect the quality of the weld.

2. Use a lower wire power setting during welding. The tip of the welding wire (the heated end) must always be protected by an inert gas shield. Maintain a short arc throughout the entire welding process to control the temperature between passes. When the arc is turned off, make sure to fill the crater before stopping the gas flow. Allow the gas to continue for at least 30 seconds after the arc is extinguished to prevent hot cracking.

3. Avoid letting the tungsten electrode come into contact with the molten pool or the welding wire. Keep the arc length as short as possible to prevent tungsten inclusions in the weld, which can weaken the joint and cause defects.

4. Ensure the welding speed is properly controlled. A slower speed increases the heat input, leading to excessive loss of alloying elements and potential overheating of the heat-affected zone. This can result in larger grain structures and reduced mechanical properties. On the other hand, welding too fast may lead to poor fusion, incomplete penetration, and the formation of crater cracks due to insufficient heat and inadequate metallurgical reactions.

5. Welding supervisors and operators should wear specialized gloves and use matching tools to maintain consistency and safety. When filling the crater, do so carefully to avoid cracking. A wind shield must be used during welding, and the gap between the wind shield and the pipe should be between 1 to 2 mm. For the highest standards, this gap should be kept within 0 to 1.6 mm. The weld surface must be free from cracks, lack of fusion, undercut, porosity, and slag inclusions. It must also pass inspection using X-ray flaw detection to ensure proper penetration and integrity of the weld.

6. All on-site welds must undergo radiographic testing. The first-time pass rate and surface quality must meet the required standards to ensure the reliability and durability of the welded joints.

By following these guidelines, you can significantly improve the quality and strength of your Hastelloy pipe welds, ensuring they perform well under demanding conditions.
