Tuesday evening, Dennis McGuire, Jr. dropped by the Homewood Acres Fire Department to drop off some images and information about their operations. While they aren't fully operational just yet, things are definitely moving forward. Currently, they have around 15 volunteers and training sessions are ongoing.
One of the older pieces of equipment, Engine 1932—a 1972 Ford-John Bean model with a 1,000-gallon-per-minute (GPM) pump and 750 gallons of water—has recently been sold. It's heading to a man in Grant Park, Illinois, who owns a pawn shop in Flossmoor. This Ford, known for its gas-powered engine, has seen a lot of action over the years, having served with X-East Joliet FPD, X-Holbrook FPD, and X-Glenwood, Illinois, respectively. It's set to leave tomorrow morning (May 30) and will be displayed at the pawn shop for promotional purposes.
On the brighter side, there's a new addition to the fleet. The replacement for the old rig is the 1985 Ford/Pierce Engine 1932, which comes equipped with a 1,250-GPM pump and 1,000 gallons of water. Interestingly, they're still debating whether to paint it or keep it in its pristine white condition. This particular vehicle hails from Plainfield, Illinois, and carries the Pierce serial number E-2635.
Meanwhile, another piece of equipment from Country Club Hills was taken out of service a few months back and replaced with a 1986 Mack/Ward 79 pumper from Burbank, Illinois, formerly known as Engine 208. This Mack model boasts a 1,250-GPM pump and holds 750 gallons of water, making it a solid piece of firefighting machinery. Its Mack serial number is CF685FC-2242.
For those interested in capturing the evolution of the fleet, Dennis also shared a picture of all three rigs lined up together, creating quite the visual spectacle. As of May 29, 2012, this is the current lineup of vehicles at the Homewood Acres Fire Protection District.
It’s exciting to see how the department is evolving, and with dedicated volunteers and new equipment coming in, they’re clearly on track to becoming fully operational soon.
