Traffic Simulation Comes to Autodesk InfraWorks 360

The latest update to Autodesk InfraWorks 360 offers a more seamless integration between design and analysis, making it easier for engineers and designers to create comprehensive infrastructure models.

Designing roads is often a complex and iterative process. Engineers must consider various factors such as geographic limitations, budget constraints, compliance with safety standards, and traffic capacity. The new traffic simulation and analysis tools in the latest version of Autodesk InfraWorks 360 help bring all these elements together in one intelligent 3D model. This not only improves accuracy but also reduces the time needed for internal approvals, as stakeholders can review and validate designs more efficiently.

In addition to the traffic simulation feature, the update includes several improvements in collaboration and design flexibility. One notable addition is the ability to share models in read-only mode, giving users better control over their data. There are also new features for road, rail, and bridge design that enhance productivity and realism in modeling.

Traffic Simulation

The traffic simulation module, previously available as an Autodesk Labs Preview, is now fully integrated into Roadway Design for InfraWorks 360. This powerful tool allows designers to simulate real-world traffic conditions, including different traffic volumes, peak hours, turn lanes, and signalized intersections—yes, even roundabouts! By running simulations during the early stages of design, engineers can identify potential bottlenecks and optimize layouts before handing the project off to traffic specialists. This leads to fewer revisions and smoother collaboration between teams.

Traffic SimulationThe intuitive interface of the Traffic Simulation module clearly highlights when roads exceed capacity, helping you quickly spot areas that need improvement.

Beyond traffic simulation, this update introduces several enhancements across different design disciplines:

  • Rail Design: Users can now define custom rail styles, offering greater flexibility in modeling structures like tunnels, viaducts, and track transitions. Additionally, rail features can be grouped, allowing for more efficient modeling—such as using a single bridge to support multiple tracks instead of creating separate ones.
  • Road Design: Intersection modeling has been significantly improved, supporting staggered, right-in/right-out, and left-in/left-out configurations. Roundabouts have also been enhanced to accommodate both left- and right-hand drive traffic, along with standard road markings and yield lines.
  • Bridge Design: A library of pier and foundation styles is now available, making models more realistic. Changes to components like piers or girders can be applied across the entire design automatically. Model regeneration and quantity calculations are now optimized, improving performance and reducing unnecessary processing.

Intersection Design EnhancementsEnhanced intersection tools make it easier to create complex designs like staggered crossings and multi-directional turns.
