Toyota Trekker: The Retro Pickup/SUV Hybrid Everyone Forgot About

Trekker1

The 1980s were a golden era for automotive innovation, and among the many unique vehicles that emerged during this time was the Toyota Trekker. While not as well-known as other models from the decade, the Trekker stands out for its versatility, rarity, and nostalgic charm. If you’ve never heard of the Trekker, you’re not alone. Only around 1,000 to 1,500 units were ever produced between 1981 and 1983. Today, many of these rare machines are tucked away in garages or sitting in junkyards, waiting for someone to rediscover their potential. A fully restored Trekker is now nearly impossible to find, and even finding original parts can be a challenge—Toyota no longer produces them. Despite this, the Trekker has a loyal following of enthusiasts who appreciate its blend of rugged off-road capability and cozy camping features. It's a car with a story, and one worth knowing about.

A Brief Overview of the Trekker

Designed for adventure, the Toyota Trekker was a unique hybrid of a compact pickup truck and an SUV, offering both on-road and off-road capabilities. Available in 4x2 and 4x4 configurations, it featured a retro-style interior with a rear bench seat and a camper shell, making it ideal for weekend getaways. Although classified by Toyota as an SR5 (a term used for feature-packed pickups), the Trekker was more than just a truck—it had the feel of an SUV with a comfortable, RV-like interior. Winnebago even offered a conversion kit that allowed owners to turn their Trekker into a mobile camping unit, complete with a fold-out bed, fiberglass tub, and canopy.

How the Toyota Trekker Came About

The story of the Trekker began in 1979 when Toyota discontinued the Land Cruiser FJ40, a popular model among off-road enthusiasts. One person who was particularly affected was Jack Safro, a Toyota dealer from Wisconsin. Safro wasn’t just a car lover—he was a visionary. He took inspiration from the FJ40 and created his own version of a rugged, versatile vehicle. What started as a dream became a reality when he partnered with Winnebago to develop a custom conversion. The idea was so compelling that Toyota eventually got involved, and production of the Trekker began in 1981. During its short production run, the Trekker became a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts, especially in Colorado, where it was marketed as a reliable all-weather vehicle for camping and off-roading. However, by 1983, Toyota decided to focus on the upcoming 4Runner, and production of the Trekker came to an end. Despite being discontinued over 30 years ago, the Trekker still holds a special place in the hearts of collectors and modifiers. Its unique design, limited numbers, and connection to the 4Runner make it a sought-after piece of automotive history. Have you ever seen a Toyota Trekker in real life?
