Toyota Going Green

According to a recent report from the Wall Street Journal, Toyota is making a big push toward sustainability by planning to establish 100 eco-friendly dealerships nationwide by 2011. These new locations will follow the green model pioneered by the Lafontaine Automotive Group in Highland, Michigan, which has already invested over $15 million to transform its facility into one of the most environmentally conscious auto dealers in the country.

The Lafontaine dealership is a great example of what a green business can look like. They use vegetable oil to lubricate their hydraulic lifts, reducing their reliance on harmful chemicals. The building is illuminated by natural light from skylights, and even the doors are made from pressed corn, showcasing innovative use of sustainable materials. Water used in the car wash is recycled and reused, while geothermal heating keeps the space comfortable year-round. Employees also wear organic cotton shirts, further emphasizing the company’s commitment to eco-conscious practices.

The first fully green Toyota dealership is expected to open within the next few weeks. While it's still unclear if they'll stock only genuine Toyota parts or include other brands, one thing is certain—this move marks a significant step forward for the automotive industry in embracing greener technologies and operations.
