Fire departments train in vacant house

This is from Dennis McGuire, Jr. The Alsip Fire Department, in collaboration with the Garden Homes Fire Protection District and the Homewood Acres Fire Protection District, conducted a controlled burn at a vacant home located at 120th Street and Hamlin Avenue in Alsip, Illinois. The event marked the culmination of a month-long training exercise involving multiple fire departments. Throughout the month, each department participated in various smaller training scenarios within the house, gradually building up to the final controlled burn. I arrived toward the end of the process and was fortunate enough to witness and document the final phase of this extensive training effort. The training involved different types of fire suppression techniques, including garage burns, engine operations, and aerial water coverage. Several photos were taken during the event, showing firefighters in action as they worked to simulate real-life emergency situations. The house was eventually fully involved, with the structure collapsing into the basement. After the burn, firefighters worked together to pull down the remaining walls, ensuring the site was safely cleared. These exercises are crucial for maintaining readiness and teamwork among local fire departments. It’s always interesting to see how these agencies come together to prepare for real emergencies.
