Winfield dive rescue (2010)

When we shared the story about the Winfield Fire District recently, Stephen Wilcox sent in some compelling photos and reflections from a memorable incident that took place last summer. His account really caught my attention. One thing that stood out was the **Winfield Dive/Rescue vehicle**. I dug back to 2010, during late summer, for a call they responded to involving two people who weren’t paying attention to their surroundings. The West Branch of the DuPage River runs just a block or two from their station. A short hike up to locate them and start the rescue. The couple had ended up on an island when the water level began rising quickly. They made a cell phone call, and help arrived shortly after. The divers entered upstream and worked their way toward the island where the stranded couple was waiting. With careful coordination, the firefighters safely brought both individuals to the shore. It was a clear example of how prepared and efficient the team is, even in unexpected situations. Here are some photos from that day, taken by Stephen Wilcox:

It's always inspiring to see how local fire departments handle emergencies with skill and care. This particular rescue reminded me of the importance of being alert, especially near bodies of water. Thanks to Stephen for sharing these great images and his detailed recollection.
