The Glenside Fire Protection District, which serves the majority of Glendale Heights and Glen Ellyn Countryside in DuPage County, Illinois, is currently seeking a Deputy Fire Chief. Located 25 miles west of Chicago, the district is primarily residential with some commercial areas. It covers a four-square-mile area and serves approximately 34,000 residents from a single fire station. In 2015, the department responded to 2,349 calls, including fires, emergency medical services (EMS), and specialized rescue operations. The district operates with 18 full-time firefighters, 20 on-call personnel, two chief officers, and four administrative staff. The ideal candidate should be an energetic, experienced leader with strong communication and interpersonal skills. A commitment to high professional standards is essential, along with experience in both fire suppression and EMS. The Deputy Fire Chief must have an inclusive leadership style and prior experience working in a union environment. This appointed position, under the direction of the Fire Chief, involves overseeing operations, planning, organizing, and directing departmental programs. Responsibilities include managing budgets, fire prevention, training, records management, and coordinating fire suppression, rescue, and EMS activities. This is an FLSA exempt position. **Minimum Qualifications:** Candidates should have extensive fire ground command experience, with strong supervisory and leadership abilities. They must possess comprehensive knowledge of modern fire department operations and administration, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build effective relationships with staff and the public. Strong judgment, administrative skills, and familiarity with labor/management relations and collective bargaining are also required. **Education Requirements:** - A Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science is required; a Master’s Degree in a related field is preferred. - Certification as a Fire Officer III by the Illinois State Fire Marshal and Hazardous Materials Incident Command is mandatory. - A valid Illinois driver’s license is required. - Candidates must reside within 10 miles of the fire station within one year of appointment. - Five years of experience in fire district policies, rules, and regulations is preferred. **Compensation and Benefits:** The salary range is $91,045 – $101,766, depending on qualifications and experience.
