Company Origin

The roots of Massey Ferguson go back to 1847 when Daniel Massey established the Newcastle Foundry and Machine Manufactory in Clarington, Ontario. Over time, the company evolved into Massey Manufacturing Co., known for producing some of the first mechanical threshers. By the late 19th century, it had grown into one of the largest employers in the Toronto area.

In 1891, Massey Manufacturing merged with A. Harris, Son and Company to form Massey-Harris Limited. This partnership made the company one of the largest farm equipment manufacturers in the world. It continued to expand its product line, including threshers, reapers, and even safety bicycles.

Farm Equipment Innovation

In 1930, Massey-Harris introduced its first tractor, the 20 horsepower GP 15/22. Later models like the Pacemaker (1936) and Model 101 (1938) helped establish the company as a leader in tractor development. Massey-Harris was among the first to develop a four-wheel drive tractor, marking a significant milestone in agricultural technology.

In 1938, engineer Tom Carroll invented the first self-propelled combine, the Massey-Harris Number 20. Though not mass-produced at the time, this innovation laid the groundwork for future models like the Number 21 developed in 1940.

Wartime Production

During World War II, Massey-Harris shifted production to support the Allied forces, manufacturing tanks, artillery vehicles, and military tractors. Notable models included the M5 Stuart tank, M24 Chaffee, and several self-propelled units.

After the war, the company introduced the triple series tractors, featuring power steering, live PTO, and advanced hydraulics. These improvements reflected the evolving needs of modern farming.
