Saturday evening turned into quite the scene down on the southwest side of Chicago. I’m Erik Haak, and I happened to catch this fire in progress at a metal grinding facility on South Lawndale Avenue just after 7:50 PM. It all started with a call about an explosion at 4828 South Lawndale, and by the time firefighters arrived, smoke was already visible from both the A and D sides of the building.
The fire department quickly escalated their response to a full still alarm, and it wasn’t long before they realized they were dealing with something serious. The flames were contained primarily in a rear section of the complex, measuring about 125 feet by 325 feet. Fortunately, some of the additional structures weren’t affected, but the main area saw significant damage. Command decided to pull MABAS Division 10 Box #14-01 at around 8:12 PM due to heavy smoke inside the building.
The firefighting effort required multiple aerials to handle the stubborn blaze. Riverside Truck 1629 was positioned on the northeast corner of the building, operating within the fenced-off area. Their aerial ladder can clearly be seen raised in several photos. Brookfield Truck 419 set up on Lawndale from the southeast corner, while Bedford Park Truck 705 worked from inside the complex on the southern side of the structure. Pleasantview Truck 1519 utilized a master stream from the northwest corner near Clyde Terrace, and Tri-State Truck 529 was stationed off the Joliet Road side, though they didn’t raise their aerial during the operation. Lyons Squad 1316 focused on lighting up the east side, where much of the action took place.
Meanwhile, McCook Engine 1416 played a crucial role in supplying water to various operations, including Riverside’s Truck and several handlines. These images were captured roughly an hour into the incident.
Attached are some photos I managed to snap. First up is the Bedford Park FD Snorkel, which really stood out for its unique design. Next is Brookfield FD Truck 419, looking impressive as always. Then there’s Lyons FD Squad 1316, ready to tackle any challenge thrown its way. Following that is McCook FD Engine 1416, a workhorse of the department. Last but not least, Pleasantview FD Truck 1519, which played a key role in managing the fire from the northwest corner.
It was quite a sight to see so many departments working together under pressure. The crews did an amazing job handling what turned into a slow-burning inferno, with the fire melting through parts of the roof made of fiberglass. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and the firefighters stuck to their training despite the tough conditions. This was definitely one of those nights that tested everyone's skills, but the teamwork and dedication were evident throughout.
