Saturday evening, around 7:50 PM, the McCook Fire Department received an emergency call about an explosion at a metal grinding company located at 4828 S. Lawndale. By the time the first responders arrived just four minutes later, they confirmed smoke coming from both the A and D sides of the building. The situation quickly escalated, prompting a full-scale response.
The fire was localized to a 125-foot by 325-foot single-story section at the back of the complex, which had multiple uninvolved additions. Command declared the operation over at 8:12 PM, following reports of significant smoke inside. However, the fire proved stubborn, requiring multiple aerial units to manage the slow-burning flames that had melted parts of the fiberglass roof.
Riverside's Truck 1629 took position at the northeast corner of the building, operating within the fenced-off area of the complex. Their aerial ladder can be seen raised in several photos. Brookfield's Truck 419 positioned itself at the southeast corner, set up along Lawndale Avenue. Bedford Park's Truck 705 delivered a water stream from inside the complex on the southern side of the structure. Pleasantview's Truck 1519 utilized a master stream from the northwest corner, with setup on Clyde Terrace. Tri-State's Truck 529 was stationed near the Joliet Road side but did not deploy their aerial ladder. Lyons' Squad 1316 focused on lighting up the east side of the building, where much of the firefighting action took place. McCook's Engine 1416 supplied water to Riverside's Truck as well as several handlines. These images were captured roughly an hour into the incident.
Attached are some photos taken during the operation. The Bedford Park FD Snorkel is visible in one shot, while another highlights Brookfield's Truck 419. Lyons' Squad 1316 is showcased in yet another image. McCook's Engine 1416 makes an appearance as well, alongside Pleasantview's Truck 1519. Each photo captures the intense efforts of these departments working together to control the blaze.
