The Burnham Fire Department responded to a fire at a three-story apartment building located at 14000 S. Torrence Avenue yesterday. Multiple calls were received throughout the day, and first-arriving units found heavy smoke on the ground floor, prompting them to upgrade the alarm to a MABAS Box Alarm. Several neighboring departments, including Calumet City, Dolton, South Holland, and Munster, Indiana, sent mutual aid to support the response.
Despite the intensity of the fire, crews were able to bring it under control relatively quickly, and no injuries were reported. The scene was clearly chaotic, with multiple fire engines, ladders, and emergency vehicles working in unison to contain the blaze.
Tim Olk arrived after the fire had been extinguished but managed to capture several compelling images of the scene, including the responding apparatus and firefighters resting after the operation. His photos offer a glimpse into the coordinated effort that took place during the incident.
One image shows firefighters taking a moment to catch their breath following the intense work. Another highlights Calumet City Truck 309 positioned in the 'A' Sector, supporting hand lines as part of the firefighting effort. Burnham Engine 2014, a 2007 HME Ahrens-Fox, was the first engine to arrive on the scene, while South Holland Engine 665, built by Smeal on an HME chassis, was en route to assist.
Burnham Engine 2016, a 1996 HME SFO Luverne, was staged nearby, ready for any additional needs. Meanwhile, Munster Indiana Fire Department’s Truck 2221, an American LaFrance/LTI tower ladder, was also on the scene as part of MABAS Division 24. Lastly, the Third District Fire Chief's Association canteen unit was present to provide support and assistance to the responders.
