Tianji Group becomes the largest NOx reduction company
In a significant move toward sustainable industrial practices, the Shanxi Tianji Group has recently entered into a partnership with two international firms—ECO, a UK-based company, and VITO, a Swiss organization—to develop and implement projects focused on reducing nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions and participating in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). This collaboration marks a milestone for Tianji, positioning it as China's largest NOx reduction enterprise.
Under the terms of the agreement, ECO and VITO will cover all financial and technological requirements for the project, including development, installation, and operation. In return, Tianji will be granted 6.5 million tons of emission credits over five years starting from 2007. These credits will be sold to the foreign partners at a net price of $10 per ton of COâ‚‚ equivalent. According to Chinese regulations, 30% of the revenue from CDM projects is required to be returned to the government, while the remaining 70% goes to the company. Based on these figures, Tianji is expected to generate several tens of millions of yuan annually over the next five years.
The technology employed in this project involves the use of a Raschig ring catalyst placed beneath the platinum mesh in the oxidizing furnace. This setup enables the reaction of nitrous oxide within the oxynitride stream, achieving a conversion rate of 80% to 90% through the decomposition of 2Nâ‚‚O into 2Nâ‚‚ and Oâ‚‚. The catalyst has a service life of approximately three years and is particularly well-suited for older double-pressure nitric acid production systems that are no longer efficient under traditional processes.
Tianji Group currently holds the title of China’s largest nitric acid producer, with an annual output of 810,000 tons. During the production process, nitric acid plants emit a gas commonly referred to as "laughing gas," which is primarily composed of N₂O. Under normal operating conditions, this gas cannot be converted into nitrogen dioxide or absorbed by water, and is instead released directly into the atmosphere.
Nitrous oxide is one of the most potent greenhouse gases, with a global warming potential 310 times greater than that of carbon dioxide. It is also more harmful to the ozone layer than chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and can remain in the atmosphere for 150 to 170 years. Its contribution to global warming is estimated at around 6%, and its atmospheric concentration has been rising sharply in recent years. By implementing this innovative reduction technology, Tianji is not only improving its environmental footprint but also securing long-term economic benefits through the CDM framework.
