Tianji Group becomes the largest NOx reduction company

In a significant move toward sustainable industrial practices, the Shanxi Tianji Group has recently entered into a partnership with two international firms: the UK-based ECO company and the Swiss firm VITO. Together, they are launching a joint initiative focused on reducing nitrous oxide (Nâ‚‚O) emissions and developing a clean development mechanism (CDM) project. This collaboration marks a major milestone for Tianji, as it is expected to become China's largest company specializing in NOx reduction. Under the terms of the agreement, ECO and VITO will provide full funding and advanced technologies for the development, installation, and operation of the project. In return, Tianji will be granted 6.5 million tons of emission credits over five years starting from 2007. These credits will be sold to the foreign partners at a net price of $10 per ton of carbon dioxide equivalent. According to Chinese regulations, 30% of the revenue from CDM projects must be returned to the government, while the remaining 70% goes to the enterprise. Based on this model, Tianji is projected to generate tens of millions of yuan in annual net profit over the next five years. The technology employed in the project involves the use of a Raschig ring catalyst placed beneath the platinum mesh in the oxidizing furnace. This setup enables the reaction of nitrous oxide with oxynitride, achieving a decomposition efficiency of 80% to 90%, converting 2Nâ‚‚O into 2Nâ‚‚ and Oâ‚‚. The catalyst has a service life of about three years and is particularly well-suited for older, double-pressure nitric acid production systems that are no longer efficient. Tianji Group currently operates as the largest nitric acid production base in China, with an annual output of 810,000 tons. During the production process, nitric acid plants emit a gas commonly referred to as "laughing gas," which is primarily composed of nitrous oxide. Under normal operating conditions, this gas cannot be converted into useful nitrogen dioxide or absorbed by water, leading to direct atmospheric release. Nitrous oxide is one of the most potent greenhouse gases, with a global warming potential 310 times greater than that of carbon dioxide. It also has a more severe impact on the ozone layer than chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and can remain in the atmosphere for 150 to 170 years. Its contribution to global warming is estimated at around 6%, and its atmospheric concentration has been rising rapidly in recent years. This new project not only helps reduce environmental harm but also positions Tianji as a leader in green industrial innovation, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change through technological advancement and international cooperation.
