State Oceanic Administration Says China's Coastal Waters Are Still Seriously Contaminated

On January 16, the State Oceanic Administration released the 2007 China Marine Environment Quality Bulletin, highlighting ongoing challenges in coastal water quality. According to the report, pollution levels in China's coastal waters remain a critical issue, with inorganic nitrogen, active phosphates, and petroleum continuing to be the primary pollutants. Despite some slight improvements in nearshore areas, the overall pollution level remains high, while most offshore regions are still considered clean. The bulletin also noted that the total area of sea waters meeting clean standards was approximately 145,000 square kilometers, a decrease of about 400 square kilometers compared to 2006. Severely polluted zones are concentrated in key areas such as Liaodong Bay, Bohai Bay, Huanghekou, Laizhou Bay, the Yangtze River estuary, Hangzhou Bay, the Pearl River estuary, and coastal waters near major cities. These regions continue to face significant environmental pressures due to industrial and urban discharges. Additionally, among the 573 monitored sea outfalls, around 87.6% were found to exceed discharge limits, with chemical oxygen demand (COD), phosphate, suspended solids, and ammonia nitrogen being the most common over-limit substances. Further analysis of sewage discharge samples revealed the presence of high levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and highly toxic heavy metals, which have had a noticeable impact on the surrounding marine environment. This underscores the urgent need for stricter regulation and improved wastewater treatment measures to protect China’s coastal ecosystems.
