State Oceanic Administration Says China's Coastal Waters Are Still Seriously Contaminated

On January 16, the State Oceanic Administration released the 2007 China Marine Environment Quality Bulletin, highlighting ongoing challenges in coastal water quality. The report indicates that pollution levels in China's coastal waters remain a critical concern, with inorganic nitrogen, active phosphates, and petroleum continuing to be the primary pollutants. Despite some slight improvements in nearshore areas, the overall pollution level remains severe, while most offshore regions still maintain relatively clean conditions. However, the total area meeting clean water quality standards decreased by approximately 400 square kilometers compared to 2006, reaching around 145,000 square kilometers. Severely polluted zones are concentrated in key areas such as Liaodong Bay, Bohai Bay, Huanghekou, Laizhou Bay, the Yangtze River estuary, Hangzhou Bay, the Pearl River estuary, and coastal waters near major cities. These regions continue to face significant environmental pressures from industrial and urban discharges. Additionally, of the 573 monitored sea outlets, about 87.6% exceeded discharge limits, with chemical oxygen demand (COD), phosphates, suspended solids, and ammonia nitrogen being the most common pollutants. Notably, some sewage outflows contained high levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and toxic heavy metals, which have had a noticeable impact on the surrounding marine environment. This underscores the urgent need for stricter regulations and more effective pollution control measures to protect China’s coastal ecosystems. The findings emphasize the importance of sustained monitoring and collaborative efforts between government agencies, industries, and local communities to address the growing environmental concerns.
