Prospect Heights Box Alarm 11-21-13 (pt 1)

This report comes from Larry Shapiro:

A resident of Prospect Heights called around 6:20 PM to report smoke coming from a house at 415 Cherry Creek Lane. Since this address is on the northern edge of the Prospect Heights Fire Protection District, the first responding unit was Arlington Heights Engine 4. They arrived quickly and found light smoke showing, so they pulled a line. Within minutes, Prospect Heights units such as Engine 39, Squad 9, Tanker 9, and Battalion 9 arrived on scene.

The home is located at the end of a cul-de-sac with no nearby fire hydrants. Long Grove Tanker 55 was dispatched as part of an automatic aid response, along with Wheeling Engine 23, Battalion 24, and Palatine Ambulance 83. The alarm was quickly upgraded to a Code 4 due to the working fire, bringing in additional resources like Northbrook Tower 12, Palatine Rural Tanker 36, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Squad 51, Glenview Ambulance 8, and Mt. Prospect Engine 14.

Before Engine 4 could use their 500-gallon tank, Tanker 9 provided a 3,000-gallon supply, which was soon topped off by another 3,000 gallons from Tanker 55. The nearest hydrant was half a mile away across Hintz Road in Wheeling. To manage the water supply, Squad 9 laid 1,500 feet of 5-inch hose, followed by 700 feet from Engine 39. Because the line crossed Hintz Road, police activated an ILEAS Box Alarm for extra units from Mt. Prospect, Arlington Heights, Wheeling, and Northbrook.

Firefighters made an interior attack on the fire, which was reported to be in a closet and had spread to multiple levels of the attic. Heavy smoke was visible from the ridge vent, windows, and eaves. A vent hole was cut in the roof over the garage, allowing heavy fire to escape.

The situation worsened, prompting the alarm to be upgraded to a Box Alarm. Additional units included a quint from Palatine, a tower ladder from Buffalo Grove, a squad from Deerfield, a Morton Grove squad operating as Niles Service Truck 2, a tanker from Elk Grove Township, and engines from Des Plaines and North Maine. Chief officers from various districts, including Niles Battalion 2, Glenview Battalion 6, Northbrook 1100, Wheeling 2400, and Long Grove 5500, also arrived on scene, along with Prospect Heights Chiefs 900 and 901.

Thanks to the quick action of the interior crews, the fire was contained without the need for an evacuation or defensive operations. Most of the box alarm units were not required.
