I just arrived at the scene of a fire that happened earlier this morning at 1433 South Kenneth Avenue. The address is a three-story, vacant apartment building that has been marked with the ominous red "X," indicating it's been condemned. By the time I got here, the fire had already been mostly contained, but there was still some smoke lingering around.
The fire originated on the third floor, and it looked like it had spread quite extensively in that area. I saw a few pieces of equipment being used to tackle the situation—a tower ladder, a Snorkel from Truck 5-5-2, a multi-versal apparatus, and a couple of handlines. It seemed like they were doing their best to handle the aftermath.
Unfortunately, both Tower Ladder 14 and Engine 99 experienced some mechanical issues. Engine 117 was called in to replace Engine 99, and Truck 5 was sent over to assist Tower Ladder 14. Despite these setbacks, the firefighters remained focused on getting the job done.
I snapped a few pictures while I was here. The first few shots show the Snorkel and multi-versal on the north side of the building. One image captures Chicago Squad 2A deployed in the alley, giving a good view of two sides of the structure. Another shot highlights the multi-versal being used on the north side. There are also a couple of images showcasing the command van and air mask unit, as well as Engine 38, which was the first engine to arrive at the scene. You can see Engine 99, a Spartan fire engine, as well as Truck 48, which served as the still alarm truck. There's also a picture of the tower ladder with the Snorkel in the background. Elevated master streams are visible in another image, working to douse any remaining hot spots on the third floor. From the rear angle, you can see the tower ladder and squad hard at work. Another shot features Squad 2’s Snorkel in action, and there's one more showing a spare tower ladder in operation.
This whole incident really highlights the challenges faced by our firefighters every day. Even when things don’t go perfectly according to plan, they always find a way to get the job done. It’s truly inspiring to witness their dedication firsthand.
