4-Alarm fire in Justice, 12-30-18
On Sunday night, December 30, 2018, the Roberts Park Fire Protection District (FPD) responded to a fire at 8701 W. 85th Place, which was located in a third-floor apartment. The situation quickly escalated, and the incident was eventually classified as a 4-alarm fire. The blaze severely damaged the top floor of the building, with significant destruction also affecting the first and second floors. The fire occurred in the end unit of a row of three buildings separated by firewalls. Although flames did spread into one unit of the adjacent building, the rest of that structure and the end building were ultimately saved.
To combat the fire, large master streams from Bedford Park, Pleasantview, and Evergreen Park fire trucks were deployed on two sides of the building. Additionally, multiple large lines were operated from the ground and deck guns by units from Roberts Park and Bridgeview. Firefighters worked for several hours under challenging conditions, demonstrating remarkable coordination and effort to contain the blaze.
An incomplete list of responding units included fire departments from Roberts Park, Bridgeview, Lemont, North Palos, Lyons, Palos Heights, Crestwood, Orland, Pleasantview, Alsip, Evergreen Park, Bedford Park, Central Stickney, Chicago Ridge, Summit, Oak Lawn, and Chicago. The extensive response highlighted the severity of the fire and the community’s commitment to public safety.
