As I sit here reflecting on the events of December 29, 2017, when the commercial building fire broke out in Des Plaines, I can't help but think about the brave firefighters who worked tirelessly to control the blaze. The images captured that day tell an important story of courage and teamwork.
The first photo shows firefighters at the winter fire scene, their faces determined despite the harsh conditions. Niko Stefani’s image captures the essence of what it means to face danger head-on. In another shot, we see Mount Prospect FD's hose wagon ready for action, a testament to the meticulous preparation that goes into every response.
One of my favorite photos is of Des Plaines FD Truck 63. It’s a powerful reminder of how these vehicles play such a crucial role in managing large-scale fires. Then there’s the image of firefighters posing after battling the winter fire—a moment of camaraderie and relief after the chaos has subsided.
Another striking photo features Skokie FD Truck 16, standing tall amidst the smoke and debris. It’s fascinating to see how each department brings its unique resources to the table during emergencies. There’s also a poignant picture of firefighters in full PPE at the scene, highlighting the protective gear that keeps them safe while they fight the flames.
The series wouldn’t be complete without the shots of the car=X auto shop, completely destroyed by fire. These images serve as a stark reminder of the destruction wildfires can leave behind. One particularly memorable image is of Des Plaines FD Engine 62, showcasing the advanced equipment used to tackle such incidents.
Among the reader-submitted photos, there’s a fantastic shot of Mount Prospect FD’s foam tender/hose wagon, which played a key role in containing the fire. Another excellent contribution comes from Glenview FD Engine 8, demonstrating yet another department’s capability in handling emergencies. The readers’ submissions include several views of the devastated car-X auto shop, capturing both the scale of the damage and the dedication of those who responded.
Each of these photos tells a story—of resilience, teamwork, and the unwavering commitment of first responders. They remind us of the importance of preparedness and the incredible work done by our local fire departments. As someone who witnessed these events unfold, I feel deeply grateful for the efforts of everyone involved.
