Box Alarm fire in Mundelein, 9-2-20

Mundelein firefighters were called to a commercial building fire on Wednesday afternoon at 839 S. Lake Street. When they arrived, there was some light smoke coming from the roof of a strip mall, and haze could be seen inside the restaurant. As the situation progressed, the building was evacuated due to the increasing intensity of the fire. The alarm was escalated to a Box Alarm to bring in more resources. The flames quickly spread, damaging the roof and the front overhang, causing the signage to collapse. Fortunately, the fire was contained to just one unit, though it caused significant damage to the neighboring restaurant. Firefighters used a ladder pipe for a brief period after retreating from the building. Units responding to the scene came from Mundelein, Countryside, Deerfield-Bannockburn, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Libertyville, Wauconda, Lake Forest, Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, Arlington Heights, and Lake Zurich. It was a coordinated effort from multiple departments to control the blaze and ensure public safety. Attached are several photos taken by DBFD showing the extent of the fire and the collaborative firefighting efforts. The images capture the intense flames and the dedication of the firefighters as they worked tirelessly to contain the situation. While the restaurant suffered extensive damage, no injuries were reported, which is a testament to the swift response and strategic actions taken by the firefighting teams involved.
