Billions of auto parts market patents

Experts urge domestic companies to enhance their awareness of intellectual property protection. Reporter Qiu Dengke, with correspondent Sui Zhixuan, reported that during a recent special campaign organized by the Guangzhou Intellectual Property Office, which focused on protecting intellectual property in the auto parts industry, it was revealed that despite the high traffic and large scale of the market—16 professional markets, over 1,800 stalls, more than 200,000 products, and a total transaction volume exceeding 10 billion—the number of patented products was surprisingly low. This lack of innovation and protection raised concerns about the long-term sustainability of the industry. During an on-site inspection, reporters found very few products marked as patented, and even fewer merchants could provide valid patent certificates when asked. This reflects a broader issue in China: strong external pressure but weak internal innovation. According to an official from the Guangzhou Intellectual Property Office, most auto-related patents are currently held by foreign multinational corporations. These companies have filed numerous patents in China and are actively gathering evidence to sue local firms for infringement. The situation is tense, and if companies do not take proactive steps to protect their intellectual property, they may soon face lengthy and costly legal battles. Wu Yuejing, director of the Guangzhou Intellectual Property Office, emphasized that the primary goal of this campaign is to crack down on counterfeiting and imitation while conducting a comprehensive survey of patented products in the auto parts market. At the same time, the initiative aims to educate and guide local operators to improve their understanding of intellectual property rights, ultimately establishing a sustainable and healthy development mechanism for the industry. Wu stressed that law enforcement actions are not just about punishment—they are a means to an end. The ultimate goal is to protect, support, and promote innovation. By carrying out targeted rectification efforts, the market environment can be cleaned up, independent innovation can be safeguarded, and the auto parts industry can grow in a healthier way, effectively supporting the automotive sector as a key pillar of the economy.
