Analysis of carbon dioxide heat pump water heater

In 2002, Japan's Daikin Corporation made a significant breakthrough by introducing a single-stage swing-rotor compressor in carbon dioxide (CO₂) heat pump water heaters. This system had a rated power consumption of 1.21 kW and featured an outdoor evaporator, allowing it to produce hot water at temperatures ranging from 65°C to 90°C. The unit came with two tank capacities: 300 liters and 370 liters. Its rated heating capacity was 4.5 kW, and under standard operating conditions—outdoor air temperature of 16°C/12°C, water inlet temperature of 17°C, and outlet temperature of 65°C—it achieved a coefficient of performance (COP) as high as 3.72. Additionally, the noise level was kept relatively low at 45 dB, making it a quiet and efficient option for residential use. During the same period, Panasonic also launched its own CO₂-based heat pump water heater model, featuring a 370-liter tank. These early developments marked a key step in the adoption of CO₂ as a refrigerant in heat pump technology, offering improved efficiency and environmental benefits compared to traditional systems. The use of CO₂ not only enhanced performance but also aligned with growing global efforts to reduce the environmental impact of HVAC systems.
