Taiwan's automakers prepare their own brand dreams in the mainland

China News Service, Hong Kong, July 22 – Taipei Report: Yan Kaitai, Executive Director of Taiwan's leading automotive company Yulon Group, is making moves to establish his own car brand, with plans to enter the mainland Chinese market. According to a report by the "Economic Daily" in Taiwan, Yulon has been actively seeking opportunities to produce and sell its own branded vehicles on the mainland, including discussions for a joint venture with the Dongfeng Motor Group. The first model under Yulon’s new brand is expected to be a “light coach” vehicle, developed through a joint venture between Yuchuang and Huarong Motors, supported by Taiwan’s Development Fund. The design will be based on the retired Renault Espace platform, and it will be equipped with a 2.2-liter turbocharged gasoline engine developed by ASRock. Yan Kaitai has long expressed his desire to fulfill his parents’ dreams—Yan Qingling and Wu Yuwen—and he and other top executives at Yulon have frequently voiced frustration over the limited size of the Taiwanese market. They have criticized the lack of government support for local automotive development, arguing that only the vast mainland market offers real potential for growth and success. With the mainland’s auto market being one of the largest in the world, and the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” aiming to increase domestic brands’ market share to 60%, the timing seems right for Yulon to accelerate its expansion. Partnering with Dongfeng Motor, a former collaborator, could provide the necessary resources and infrastructure to make this vision a reality. In addition to these efforts, Yulon has already begun setting up operations on the mainland. For instance, ASRock Industries, which produces shared engines, is planning to open a factory in Fuzhou. Meanwhile, Huachuang Vehicle and Electric, a company established earlier this year, has announced plans to develop automotive electronic components. However, the ultimate goal remains the launch of Yulon’s own car brand, signaling a major step toward its long-term ambitions in the Chinese market.
