Diesel sales soar in Europe
In recent years, diesel vehicle sales have experienced a significant surge across Europe. According to the "European Automotive News" report, Italy is set to become the sixth European country where diesel cars outsell their petrol counterparts. In September, diesel passenger cars made up 52.4% of all new registrations in Italy—a first in the country’s history. As of now, diesel vehicles account for 47.3% of the market, with projections indicating that this share will rise to nearly 49% this year.
This trend isn’t unique to Italy. In France, Spain, Austria, Belgium, and Luxembourg, diesel vehicles already outperform gasoline models in terms of sales. Italy appears to be just the beginning of a broader shift toward diesel in the region. Over the past four years, diesel car sales in Western Europe have grown by an average of 4 percentage points annually. The market share of diesel vehicles has risen sharply from 24.8% in 1998 to 40.3% in 2002.
According to Colin Kuchman, an automotive analyst at Global Insight in London, the momentum shows no signs of slowing. He predicts that diesel vehicle sales in Western Europe will reach 43.2% this year, climbing to 45.9% by 2004. Analysts expect this growth to continue steadily in the coming years, driven by factors such as fuel efficiency, cost savings, and favorable government policies in several European countries. This shift highlights a major transformation in the European automotive landscape, with diesel becoming the preferred choice for many drivers.
