Rolling Meadows continues to consider plans for fire stations

The *Daily Herald* recently covered a significant discussion taking place in Rolling Meadows regarding the future of the downtown fire station. City leaders are set to make a decision in April on whether to relocate the station or invest in repairs and rebuilding.
At a recent council meeting, officials pledged to evaluate the options after hearing a proposal from Fire Chief Scott Franzgrote. He suggested moving the downtown fire station to New Wilke Road near Central Road, while relocating the second station to Hicks Road between Euclid Avenue and Kirchoff Road. According to Franzgrote, this move would improve emergency response times across the entire city.
Despite the political challenges associated with the location of New Wilke Road on the city's eastern border, it remains one of the few north-south streets east of Route 53 that stretches all the way to Golf Road. This strategic position makes it ideal for covering the majority of the department’s calls—85% of which occur east of Route 53 or just west of it. The recommendation also took into account existing aid agreements with neighboring communities like Arlington Heights and Palatine, as well as their fire station locations.
The current downtown station at 3111 Meadows Drive is 50 years old, and some aldermen have described its condition as an "embarrassment" to the city. In contrast, the station at 2455 Plum Grove Road, located west of Route 53, is 33 years old and in better shape.
Rolling Meadows has been debating the future of its fire stations for years. A previous grant had supported the idea of adding a third station, but the council decided against it during tough economic times due to concerns over costs and staffing.
Aldermen tasked Fire Chief Franzgrote with developing recommendations that involve only two stations without increasing staff. He presented five different scenarios for station locations, which are available on the city’s website: [ci.rolling-meadows.il.us](http://ci.rolling-meadows.il.us).
