Rolling Meadows continues to consider plans for fire stations

The *Daily Herald* recently published a piece detailing ongoing conversations in Rolling Meadows regarding the future of the city’s downtown fire station. City leaders are set to make a decision in April on whether to relocate the station or invest in repairs or a complete rebuild. During a recent council meeting, officials pledged to take action after hearing a proposal from Fire Chief Scott Franzgrote. He suggested moving the downtown fire station to a new location on New Wilke Road near Central Road, while relocating the second station to Hicks Road between Euclid Avenue and Kirchoff Road. According to Franzgrote, this move would optimize emergency response times across the entire city. While the proposed location on New Wilke Road is on the eastern edge of Rolling Meadows, it raises some political concerns with neighboring communities. However, the street is one of the few north-south routes east of Route 53 that stretches all the way from Euclid Avenue to Golf Road. This makes it an ideal spot for quicker access to the majority of the city's calls. In fact, 85% of the fire department’s calls occur either east of Route 53 or just west of it. The recommendation also took into account existing aid agreements with nearby cities like Arlington Heights and Palatine, as well as the locations of their respective fire stations. The current downtown fire station, located at 3111 Meadows Drive, is 50 years old and has been described by aldermen as an “embarrassment” to the city due to its deteriorating condition. The other station, situated at 2455 Plum Grove Road west of Route 53, is 33 years old and in better shape. Rolling Meadows officials have debated the future of their fire stations for years. In the past, the city had received a grant for a third station, but during tough economic times, the council opted not to proceed due to the high costs of construction and staffing. Aldermen tasked Chief Franzgrote with presenting options that involve only two stations without increasing staff. He provided the council with five different scenarios for station placement, which are available on the city’s official website at [ci.rolling-meadows.il.us](http://ci.rolling-meadows.il.us). Thanks, Dan.
