MVA with extrication and Haz Mat in Lyons, 4-21-19

On Sunday morning, April 21, 2019, firefighters from the Lyons Fire Department responded to a serious collision at Forest View Terminal Drive and Harlem Avenue involving a car and a gasoline tanker. The vehicle was trapped underneath the massive tanker, and the driver was stuck in a dangerous position. In order to safely extract the driver, a Foam Task Force was dispatched from O’Hare International Airport to assist local emergency crews on the scene. The situation required specialized equipment and expertise, as the foam application was critical to stabilize the area and prevent any potential fuel leaks or fires. Several images captured the dramatic moment as foam was applied to the car wedged beneath the tanker, highlighting the complexity of the rescue operation. Photos from the scene show the efforts of both local and airport-based emergency responders working together under high-pressure conditions. One image features Chicago Fire Department’s ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting) unit 6-5-3 applying foam, while others depict the aftermath of the crash and the teamwork involved in the operation. These visuals give a glimpse into the intense and coordinated response that took place that day. While the driver was eventually freed and taken to the hospital for evaluation, the incident served as a reminder of the dangers faced by first responders and the importance of quick, professional action in such emergencies.
