5th Alarm with 1 Special for Crystal Lake house fire 5-2-13

Hey everyone, I just got word that there's a pretty intense fire going on in Crystal Lake right now. Tyler Tobolt sent me some updates and photos from the scene. It seems like it all started around 3:20 PM at a house on 3217 Carrington Drive. When Engine 341 responded, they reported seeing a huge plume of smoke, prompting the Battalion Chief to call for a second alarm almost immediately. By the time Engine 341 arrived, the two-story house was fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters had to switch to a defensive strategy pretty quickly. Not long after, Battalion Chief 330 arrived and escalated the response further by calling in additional resources, including tankers and reinforcements from neighboring departments. As the situation worsened, they even requested an interdivisional mutual aid response from MABAS Division 4 for more personnel. The main house involved was a fairly large 50x50-foot structure that ended up spreading the fire to three adjacent houses. There were also some smaller brush fires in the area caused by embers flying around. Unfortunately, the main building eventually collapsed as the fire raged on. Tyler shared some incredible photos showing the scale of the disaster—massive plumes of smoke, water tenders lined up to supply the firefighting efforts, and firefighters working tirelessly to contain the blaze. You can check out more photos on his Facebook album here: [Link]. In addition to the structural damage, there were also some injuries reported. Two firefighters were taken to Centegra Hospital-McHenry with what are believed to be minor heat-related injuries. The fire is still burning due to concerns about a ruptured gas line nearby. Nicor has since arrived to address this issue so that firefighters can finally extinguish the flames completely. According to Battalion Chief Chris Olsen, the origin of the fire remains unknown, though he doesn't think the gas line rupture was the cause. The residents living in those homes managed to evacuate safely before the fire spread too far. Several local fire departments and even the Red Cross have been called in to help manage the situation. As a result, some roads in the area, like Terra Cotta Avenue and parts of Valley View Road, are currently closed off. It’s definitely a challenging situation, but the firefighters are doing everything they can to control things. I’ll keep you updated if I hear anything else. Stay safe everyone! - [Your Name]
