About Y-Strainer:

The most common type of strainers is the Y-strainer, named for its Y-shaped design. It is widely used in pressurized lines, steam, liquid, or gas applications, and can also be used in vacuum or suction conditions. Due to its low resistance to fluid flow, it results in minimal pressure loss, making it ideal for applications where only small amounts of solid particles are expected and frequent cleaning is not required.
The Y-strainer is typically installed in horizontal or vertical positions. The basket should be positioned at the bottom of the pipe or facing the direction of flow to collect particles. A Y-strainer may include a blow-off connection for automatic cleaning. Compared to basket strainers of the same size, Y-strainers have a higher pressure drop with liquids but a relatively lower pressure drop with gases.
Installing a strainer before valves and instrumentation can help avoid costly maintenance and repairs. When paired with Ward’s soft-seated check valves or ball valves from other manufacturers, contaminants can be effectively eliminated. Ward "Y" Strainers are available in various materials and end connections to suit different service requirements. Their Y-pattern design allows for smooth fluid flow with minimal obstruction. A Teflon cap seal with optional graphite for high temperatures prevents leaks. Maintenance is easy, as these strainers feature a blow-off outlet for self-cleaning.
