Wuxi Petrochemical Resources Reuse

Wuxi Petrochemical previously faced a significant environmental and economic challenge, as its 300,000-ton oil-refining production line released approximately 3.5 million cubic meters of flare exhaust gas annually into the atmosphere. This not only led to a massive waste of energy but also caused serious pollution in the surrounding area. To address this issue, the company implemented three key strategies aimed at turning waste into valuable resources, enhancing resource efficiency, and ultimately eliminating the use of the tail gas torch. First, the company transformed the exhaust gas into fuel for a thermal oil furnace. Through technological upgrades, part of the refinery’s flare exhaust was redirected to the BPA plant's thermal oil furnace, where it replaced diesel as a fuel source. This change not only eliminated the black smoke resulting from incomplete combustion of diesel but also saved 800 tons of diesel annually, generating over 300 million yuan in value. Second, the exhaust gas was used as fuel for a new 6-ton/hour automatic gas-fired boiler, replacing the traditional coal-fired system. By utilizing the refinery's tail gas to produce steam for industrial use, the company significantly reduced air pollution caused by incomplete combustion of the flare torch. Additionally, this approach helped reduce coal consumption, avoiding sulfur dioxide emissions from coal burning. As a result, the company saved more than 10,000 tons of steam supply while using less than 2,000 tons of coal annually, cutting costs by 1.1 million yuan. Third, Wuxi Petrochemical focused on comprehensive resource utilization. Drawing from the practices of advanced oil refineries, the company conducted extensive research and inspections before constructing a gas separation unit. This allowed them to further refine liquefied gas from the catalytic process into high-value propylene. The technical upgrade deepened the processing capacity of the refining equipment, increased overall resource utilization, and marked an important step toward transforming the refinery from a fuel-based to a chemical-based operation. The project required a total investment of 28.17 million yuan and was successfully launched in one go. In the first year, it produced over 8,000 tons of propylene, with a value exceeding 20 million yuan. More importantly, the reform enhanced the refinery's tail gas recovery system, ensuring optimal utilization of exhaust gas and contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable production process.
