The output of mechanical products such as China's oil rigs ranks first in the world
China's machinery industry has achieved remarkable progress, with several key mechanical products now leading the world in output. According to the China Machinery Industry Federation, power generation equipment stands out as one of the most significant technical achievements. In 2006, domestic power generation equipment output reached 110 million kilowatts, a notable increase from the previous year's record of 92 million kilowatts. This growth highlights the industry's rapid development and strong capacity.
Beyond power generation, numerous other mechanical products have also topped global rankings. These include large and medium-sized tractors, excavators, digital cameras, photocopiers, plastic processing machines, lifting devices, industrial boilers, transformers, power tools, metal containers, and motorcycles. The diversity and scale of these outputs reflect the broad capabilities of China's machinery sector.
In terms of structural upgrades, 2006 marked a significant turning point. Major breakthroughs were made in power equipment innovation, such as the development of ultra-supercritical thermal power units, 300,000-kilowatt hydropower units at the Three Gorges Dam, and megawatt wind turbines. The commercialization of these advanced technologies accelerated rapidly. For instance, the 600,000-kilowatt supercritical thermal power unit was produced in increasing numbers, rising from seven sets in 2004 to 40 sets in 2006. By the end of 2006, a 1 million kilowatt ultra-supercritical unit was successfully developed and deployed, marking a major milestone.
Other fields also saw the emergence of new high-tech machinery. Over 40,000 cubic meters per hour of air separation equipment was produced and exported, while oil drilling rigs of over 7,000 and 9,000 meters in length were successfully exported. The production of large-scale cold and hot rolling mills by Anshan Iron and Steel Group helped break the domestic reliance on imported technology. Additionally, the successful development of 27-cubic-meter electric shovels supported large-scale open-pit mining operations, and the DCS system with independent intellectual property rights was applied in a 600,000-kilowatt thermal power unit, ending foreign monopolies in large projects.
The pace of structural upgrades in the machinery industry accelerated in 2006. High-parameter, high-capacity, and high-efficiency power generation units became more prevalent. In 2006, 76.14% of thermal power units had a capacity of 300,000 kilowatts or more, with 48.3% being 600,000 kilowatts or above. This shift showed a clear trend toward larger, more efficient units.
Moreover, the demand for high-efficiency and advanced equipment grew significantly. The output of CNC machine tools reached 85,756 sets in 2006, a 32.8% increase compared to the previous year, far exceeding the 14.6% growth rate of general cutting machine tools.
In addition to internal improvements, the machinery industry contributed to broader energy-saving and emission-reduction efforts. It actively developed clean and efficient power generation equipment, petrochemical, coal chemical, and metallurgical systems. The domestically produced ultra-supercritical 1 million kilowatt units in Yuhuan and Zouxian achieved a thermal efficiency of 45%, with a coal consumption of 285.6 grams per kilowatt-hour—84.4 grams less than the national average. If half of the country’s existing capacity were upgraded, it could save 100 million tons of coal annually.
Furthermore, 15 9F-class gas turbine combined cycle units reached a thermal efficiency of 55%, and progress was made in clean energy technologies like hydropower, nuclear, wind, and solar photovoltaics. These developments underscore China's growing role in sustainable and advanced manufacturing.
