China Shipbuilding Heavy Industry: Digital Shipbuilding

Dalian Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Group, part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), has made significant strides in ship production and technological advancement. Initially, the company aimed to build 30 ships annually, with plans to improve efficiency and explore new opportunities. In reality, they built six more than planned. Each vessel is valued at $80 million, and this year alone, the company generated over $500 million in revenue. This growth reflects a new era of performance under CSSC's leadership. As a microcosm of CSSC’s modern shipbuilding capabilities, Dalian Shipbuilding has embraced digital shipbuilding methods, which have led to shorter construction cycles, higher productivity, and increased profitability. Over the past six years, key financial metrics such as total assets, revenue, and profit have quadrupled, setting a new benchmark for China’s equipment manufacturing industry. One of the most advanced projects is the Offshore Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units—critical for offshore oil operations. These vessels integrate processing, power generation, storage, and transportation, making them high-risk, high-tech, and high-value assets. Over the last two decades, China has progressed from small FPSOs to large-scale, deep-sea capable units, demonstrating world-class design and construction expertise. The successful development of FPSOs highlights CSSC’s commitment to innovation and sustainable growth. With optimized designs and international expansion, China’s shipbuilding industry is becoming more efficient, standardized, and competitive globally. More than 70% of CSSC’s ships are now exported, often built for top international shipowners. Major orders include 388,000-ton ore carriers, 320,000-ton ultra-large crude oil tankers, 180,000-ton bulk carriers, 6,600 TEU container ships, and 230,000-ton FPSOs. The average ship size has grown significantly, from 65,000 tons to 108,000 tons in just one year. Orders for major ships and offshore platforms have exceeded 30, showcasing CSSC’s growing influence in the global market. Beyond design, production management has also been transformed. Modularization and specialization have made shipbuilding more streamlined, akin to automotive assembly lines. This shift has improved efficiency, reduced lead times, and enhanced overall quality. Workers report that dock doors now open once a month instead of every two months, reflecting faster turnaround. Through digital shipbuilding initiatives, CSSC has implemented advanced technologies such as integrated design and manufacturing systems, agile shipbuilding methods, and process optimization. These innovations have enabled large-scale, specialized production, bringing shipbuilding cycles close to global standards. Supporting industries have also seen rapid development. A 10-meter diameter, 98-ton propeller was recently developed in Dalian, enhancing ship propulsion systems. Additionally, CSSC has made significant progress in localizing marine machinery, including deck and cabin equipment, reducing reliance on foreign imports. By focusing on science and technology, CSSC continues to strengthen its competitive edge. Supporting industries have grown alongside core shipbuilding activities, leading to a more diversified and optimized product portfolio.
