TDK to Launch Wireless Charging System for Electric Vehicles

Japanese electronic component manufacturer TDK has developed a wireless charging system for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles that it hopes will be used around 2018. The system can charge parked cars without using cables or plugs. TDK also said: "The system can even be placed on the road to provide charging for vehicles that are currently on the road." In April of this year, TDK acquired a patent portfolio of WiTricity, a Massachusetts engineering company. The new system combines WiTricity's proprietary technology with TDK's magnetic coil technology.
TDK said: "The system can be sent even if the distance of the receiving coil is more than 10cm." The automaker will demonstrate the sample of the system for the first time in the first half of 2015. The Tokyo-based company is testing the side-by-side charging technology. During the 30-meter cycle test, six 5-meter transmitter coils are placed on the road surface. Both Toyota and Nissan are conducting tests to prepare for wireless charging technology.
