SMEs should not neglect social responsibility

In May of last year, following the blue algae outbreak in Taihu Lake, several small and medium-sized chemical companies in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces were forced to shut down. Although the blue algae incident was not directly caused by these chemical firms, it serves as a wake-up call for them to take environmental protection more seriously. Over the years, large chemical companies have generally made greater efforts in environmental protection. Due to their larger scale, they naturally produce more "three wastes"—waste gas, waste water, and solid waste—and thus face more public scrutiny. As a result, some of these big companies have installed desulfurization systems and upgraded their wastewater treatment facilities, taking initial steps toward environmental responsibility. However, small-scale chemical enterprises often lag behind in terms of technology and environmental measures. Their equipment is outdated, and their pollution control capabilities are significantly weaker. Moreover, many of these small businesses are privately owned, with a strong focus on profit. During recent visits to remote areas in Hebei, Henan, and Shanxi, I observed that small chemical companies in these regions still pose serious environmental risks. In one interview with a fertilizer company in Shenzhou, Hebei, local residents expressed concerns about pollution from the facility. A few days later, during an inspection of a coking plant in Shijiazhuang, I met with locals who also complained about environmental issues. At noon, I saw thick yellow smoke coming from the factory's chimney, indicating it was operating, but likely emitting excessive pollutants. These polluting small enterprises are often located far from rivers, lakes, and urban centers, but their emissions continue to cause dissatisfaction among nearby residents, leading to numerous complaints and even petitions. Because many of these small businesses serve as key contributors to local tax revenues, local governments tend to turn a blind eye or even protect them. Despite public complaints and media exposure, these polluting companies continue to operate, sometimes barely surviving. However, this approach is unsustainable. With the country increasingly prioritizing environmental protection, small businesses that ignore their social responsibilities will find it harder to survive. Therefore, for long-term development, small companies must take proactive steps to address pollution and improve their environmental performance.

PU resin, also known as polyurethane resin, is widely used in the production of synthetic leather. Synthetic leather, also referred to as faux leather or artificial leather, is a man-made fabric that imitates the appearance and feel of genuine leather. PU resin is a key component in the manufacturing process of synthetic leather, as it provides the material with its durability, flexibility, and water resistance.

The process of producing synthetic leather involves coating a fabric substrate, such as polyester or nylon, with a layer of PU resin. This resin is typically applied in liquid form and then undergoes a curing process to solidify and bond with the fabric. The resulting material has a leather-like texture and appearance.

PU resin offers several advantages for synthetic leather production. It has excellent abrasion resistance, making the synthetic leather more durable and long-lasting. It also provides flexibility, allowing the material to be easily shaped and molded into different forms. Additionally, PU resin offers good water resistance, preventing the synthetic leather from absorbing moisture and becoming damaged.

Moreover, PU resin can be customized to achieve different finishes and textures, such as smooth, grainy, or embossed patterns, depending on the desired aesthetic. It can also be colored in various shades to mimic different types of leather. This versatility makes PU resin a popular choice for synthetic leather manufacturers.

Overall, PU resin plays a crucial role in the production of synthetic leather, providing the material with its desirable qualities of durability, flexibility, and water resistance.
