The Daily Herald recently reported that construction for a brand-new fire station in Palatine is set to begin next month. This marks an exciting development for the community as it aims to enhance emergency response capabilities in the western and northwestern parts of the area.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the satellite fire station, located at 1215 N. Quentin Road near the intersection of Echo Lane, is anticipated to commence within the next 30 to 45 days. The village council has unanimously approved a contract that caps the construction cost at $2.56 million, which includes all subcontractor bids, contingency funds, construction management fees, and bonding expenses. When factoring in additional costs such as planning, design, interior fittings, and administrative overheads, the overall project budget stands at approximately $2.98 million—just shy of the initial $3 million allocation.
While the village remains optimistic about receiving a potential $575,000 contribution from the state's capital program, they have chosen not to depend heavily on this aid. As Village Manager Reid Ottesen mentioned, "We're preparing for the possibility that we receive nothing," estimating the likelihood of securing this funding at around 50/50. To ensure financial stability, Palatine plans to issue two separate bond issuances over the coming months to cover both the fire station and the significantly larger $23 million investment required for the police headquarters. By staggering these bonds, the village avoids unnecessary interest payments while waiting for the projects to reach completion, expected by next spring.
Interestingly, earlier this year, architects revised the original 8,700-square-foot design to reduce costs slightly. Although most adjustments were aesthetic, some functional modifications reduced the maximum staffing capacity from six to five firefighters. However, any savings achieved might be offset if the village decides against waiving its mandatory sprinkler system requirements in certain areas of the building.
Once completed, the new facility is scheduled to open its doors by March or April. At that time, the older Dundee Road station will close down, with the adjacent Masonic Lodge stepping in to utilize the vacated premises. Fire department leaders emphasize that establishing this new outpost is crucial for cutting down response times across key sectors of Palatine, ultimately improving public safety measures throughout the region.
