How to identify common spark plug failures

Spark plug ablation When the owner finds a scar or damage at the top of the spark plug, the electrode melts and ablate, it indicates that the spark plug has been destroyed. At this time, the spark plug should be replaced. During the replacement process, the owner can check for signs of ablation of the spark plug and changes in color.

Symptom 1: The electrode melts and the insulator is white
Diagnosis: This phenomenon indicates that the temperature in the combustion chamber is too high. This may be caused by too much carbon deposit in the combustion chamber, resulting in a small valve clearance, which may further cause overheating of the exhaust valve or malfunction of the cooling device. When the spark plug is not tightened according to the specified torque, the electrode will also melt and the insulator will appear white.

Symptom 2: The electrode is rounded and the insulator is scarred
Diagnosis: This indicates that the engine is pre-ignited, which may be caused by the ignition time being too early or the gasoline octane number being too low, and the spark plug heat value is too high.

Symptom 3: Breaking the top of the insulator
Diagnosis: In general, knock combustion is the main cause of insulator breakdown. The ignition time is too early, the gasoline octane number is low, and the temperature in the combustion chamber is too high, which may cause the engine to knock and burn.

Symptom 4: Gray black stripes on the top of the insulator
Diagnosis: The appearance of this stripe indicates that the spark plug has leaked and the owner needs to replace the new one unconditionally.
There are deposits on the spark plug
Deposits sometimes adhere to the top of the spark plug insulator and between the electrodes. The owner should not underestimate this deposit.
In severe cases, this may cause the engine to malfunction. After cleaning the spark plug, the vehicle can be put into normal operation temporarily, but a similar situation will appear soon. In fact, the presence of deposits in the spark plug is only a surface phenomenon, which may be a sign of problems with other mechanical components of the vehicle.

Symptom 1: Oily deposits on the spark plug
Diagnosis: When oily deposits appear on the spark plug, it indicates that the lubricant has entered the combustion chamber. If there are oil deposits on individual spark plugs, it may be caused by damage to the valve stem seal. However, if the spark plug of each cylinder is stuck with such deposits, it indicates that the cylinder is oily. In general, in the case of air filter and ventilator blockage, the cylinder is prone to oil smear.

Symptom 2: Black deposits on the spark plug
Diagnosis: There are black deposits in the spark plug electrode and inside, which usually indicates that the mixed gas in the cylinder is too rich. The owner can increase the engine speed for a few minutes to burn off a layer of black soot left over the electrode.
