Fukuda and Daimler succeeded in dominating the light trucks
Foton Motor and Daimler have signed a letter of intent to establish a 50:50 joint venture in China. The collaboration involves Daimler contributing capital in cash, while Foton will transfer its Auman medium- and heavy-duty truck business after an evaluation process. This new entity is set to become the central hub for their global cooperation, managing R&D, production, supply chain, and marketing activities worldwide. Foton’s General Manager Wang Jinyu emphasized that this partnership opens strategic opportunities for both companies to explore emerging markets. Foton’s cost-effective commercial vehicles and strong market presence will help Daimler expand its footprint in these regions, while Daimler’s advanced technology and global sales network will support Foton’s international growth.
The collaboration isn’t limited to medium and heavy trucks. The joint venture will produce Auman heavy trucks equipped with Daimler’s Euro V-certified OM457 engines, featuring 460 horsepower. These products will carry both the Auman and "Mercedes-Benz Power" branding. Production capacity for the OM457 engine is expected to reach 45,000 units annually, with plans to scale up as demand increases. The joint venture will also develop a dedicated sales and service network, leveraging Foton’s existing infrastructure.
Experts believe this partnership offers mutual benefits, combining Foton’s market reach with Daimler’s technological strength. The collaboration could eventually extend to buses and other vehicle segments, with both companies aiming to capture market share in different price tiers. Foton’s Auman brand will target mid-to-low-end markets, while Daimler’s high-end models will focus on premium segments. This strategy aims to strengthen both companies’ positions in China and globally.
In addition to Daimler, Foton has also partnered with Cummins to produce advanced light diesel engines. This joint venture, Beijing Foton Cummins Engine Co., Ltd., will manufacture 2.8L and 3.8L inline four-cylinder engines, designed for light trucks, SUVs, and small construction equipment. These engines are known for high performance, low emissions, and reliability, further enhancing Foton’s product lineup.
Foton’s recent sales figures show impressive growth, with over 250,000 vehicles sold in the first half of the year. Light trucks remain a core segment, but medium- and heavy-duty trucks, along with SUVs and MPVs, are driving profitability. With ambitious targets to reach 800,000–1 million vehicles annually by 2010, Foton is positioning itself as a global player. The partnerships with Daimler and Cummins are key to achieving this goal, strengthening Foton’s technical capabilities and expanding its market reach.
Overall, Foton’s strategic alliances are not just about acquiring technology—they are about building a sustainable and competitive future in the global commercial vehicle industry.
