As foreign-brand cars have entered China in large numbers, foreign auto parts manufacturers have also poured into the Chinese market in recent days and are determined to compete with many local low-cost companies.
Foreign giants flood into the auto parts market
Many foreign parts companies believe that local competitors lack competitive technology. "This is not as simple as turning the iron," said Tim Donovan, head of international operations at Tyneke Motors. This company, headquartered in Illinois, USA, produces exhaust emissions and traffic control systems.
Donovan stated that sales of Tenak's five companies in China have increased from 11 million US dollars in 1998 to 150 million to 160 million US dollars this year, and he hopes to see them exceed 300 million U.S. dollars before 2006. China is the fastest growing market for Thai Nike, and the company’s global sales in 2003 reached US$3.8 billion.
Chinese goods are not yet rivals?
Other multinational component manufacturers that have followed their global customers into China have already made plans for the local market, and have used low-cost companies that export to the United States and Europe, and they have similar developments.
At the same time, Chinese companies are also rushing into the highly profitable automotive industry, many of which have no prior experience in the automotive industry, such as the well-known liquor brands like Wuliangye.
Donovan said at the Beijing Auto Show last week that many Chinese companies have sent invitations to cooperate with Thai Nike because they know they are not in a position to compete alone. "Even if their production processes are improving, and many companies are very good, they still have no technology."
He believes that parts manufacturers need a high level of technology to meet the needs of car manufacturers, and their requirements for parts can be used in different parts of the world. He said that Chinese manufacturers are winning in the after-sales service and spare parts market, but it is not easy to go a step further.
