Chicago Still & Box Fire 8-6-13 with Red-X

At 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, units from the 18th Battalion in Chicago responded to a fire reported at a building located at the corner of 73rd and Yale. Upon arrival, Truck 20 reported that it was a four-story, 75 by 100-foot "Red X" apartment building with the top floor fully involved. Within minutes, the fire was contained, and all companies switched to a defensive position. Aerial operations were launched with Engine 122 stationed on Yale just north of the intersection, supplying Truck 20. Engine 47 was positioned south of the fire building on Yale, supporting Squad 5 in Sector 1. Tower Ladder 34 was set up on 73rd Street at the Sector 1/4 corner, while Engine 73 took a hydrant about half a block north on Yale to support them. One unique aspect of this incident is that the address fell within Engine 54’s district, but they never responded. Instead, Engine 54 had been dispatched for an ambulance assist at 4:00 p.m., which ended in a DOA (Dead On Arrival). It took over 30 minutes for a beat car to arrive and relieve them. Another interesting detail is that Truck 20 was using a spare unit, but still had the magnetic numerals on its doors. As far as I know, Truck 20 is the only unit in the department that uses these. I noticed them a few months back, so it's something worth noting. Photos from Eric Haak capture the scene, showing the intensity of the fire and the positioning of the responding units. The images provide a clear view of the structure and the efforts made by firefighters to control the blaze. These photos are a valuable record of the event and offer insight into the coordination and response during a challenging fire situation.

Steel Angle

The steel angle is a carbon structural steel for construction. It is section steel with a simple cross-section. It is mainly used for metal components and the frame of the workshop. It is required to have good weldability, plastic deformation performance and certain mechanical strength in use. The raw steel billet for the production of angle steel is a low-carbon square billet, and the finished angle steel is delivered in the form of normalized or hot rolled.

Steel angle bar can be made into pressure structural bracket based on different size and grade, and also can be made into connector between structural beam. Widely used for various building structures and engineering structures, such as house beams, bridges, power transmission towers, lifting, and transportation machinery, ships, industrial furnaces, reaction towers, container racks, cable trench brackets, power piping, busbar bracket installation, and warehouse shelves.

Equal and unequal are the two major types of steel angle:

Steel angles are fashioned using a single Flat Steel section and bending it, generally at a 90-degree angle with both legs the same size. See below for a rundown of the different steel angle types:

Equal angle

Equal steel angles have 2 axes` that are the same length, hence their name. They are the most common types of steel section and can be made to various specs and cut to any size, making them extremely versatile. Their sizing is represented by side A x side B x thickness.

Unequal angle

Unequal steel angles are also right-angled; however, they have different sized axis` making them L-shaped. This section is much stronger (up to 20%) with a much higher strength to weight ratios. Their sizing is represented by side A x side B x thickness.
