In the early hours of December 14, 2015, Chicago firefighters were called to an industrial building fire on the 9200 block of South Baltimore Avenue. The fire broke out in a three-story structure that was reportedly still under construction, with several holes in the floor, posing significant risks to the responding teams. The fallen firefighter was part of Tower Ladder 34 and was conducting a search on the second floor at the time of the incident. Despite their best efforts, including transporting him to Christ Hospital in critical condition, the firefighter tragically succumbed to his injuries. He has been identified as Dan Capuano, a 15-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department who leaves behind three children.
According to reports, the fire originated on the second floor and was brought under control approximately an hour after it began. Commissioner Jose Santiago emphasized the bravery and dedication of the entire firefighting team during this harrowing event. In response to the incident, officials from the Chicago Building Department have arrived at the site to assess the structural integrity of the building, ensuring no further hazards remain.
