Chicago FD LODD Firefighter Dan Capuano, 12-14-15

In the early hours of December 14, 2015, Chicago firefighters were called to an industrial building fire on the 9200 block of South Baltimore Avenue. The fire broke out in a three-story structure that was reportedly still under construction, with several holes in the floor, posing significant risks to the responding teams. As firefighters worked to contain the flames, a distress call known as a "Mayday Alert" was issued when a firefighter fell through one of these openings—specifically, an open elevator shaft—down to the basement. The fallen firefighter was part of Tower Ladder 34 and was conducting a search on the second floor at the time of the incident. Emergency responders swiftly located him in the basement and immediately initiated medical efforts. Despite their best efforts, including transporting him to Christ Hospital in critical condition, the firefighter tragically succumbed to his injuries. He has been identified as Dan Capuano, a 15-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department who leaves behind three children. According to reports, the fire originated on the second floor and was brought under control approximately an hour after it began. Commissioner Jose Santiago emphasized the bravery and dedication of the entire firefighting team during this harrowing event. In response to the incident, officials from the Chicago Building Department have arrived at the site to assess the structural integrity of the building, ensuring no further hazards remain. As details continue to emerge, the community is coming together to honor the memory of firefighter Dan Capuano, recognizing not only his service but also the risks faced daily by first responders across the city. His untimely death serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers inherent in their work and the sacrifices made in the line of duty.
