In Boston, the stadium is no longer just a place for children. The 20 LED-illuminated circular swings are placed outdoors, as part of SwingTime, the first interactive sculptural installation in Boston. These suspended, illuminated circular swings are an innovation of the traditional rubber ring rope combination, suspended from a small steel structure, similar to the iron frame used in traditional sports fields. The LED light is embedded in the swing. As the swing swings, the light inside changes color, and when it is still, it changes back to dim white. Inspired by traditional sports fields, SwingTime aims to build Boston's outdoor spaces with technology and creativity. The swing was designed by Boston-based Howeler and Yoon to improve the city's lack of recreational space. SwingTime is located on the lawn of contemporary sculpture D Park, and D Park is also connected to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center on D Street in Boston's South Shore. The project also embodies the integration of technology and community participation, and also provides a new platform to encourage local innovation. Each swing has a specific model, made of three sizes of swings made of polypropylene, suitable for all people. The swing of each swing is measured by an internal accelerometer that triggers the LED light system to cause color changes, from white to blue to purple. A brief introduction by Howeler and Yoon is that the play elements in SwingTime motivate users to interact with the swings to revitalize the city park and create a community lab in the Boston Innovation Zone and southern Boston.
