2-Alarm fire in Wadsworth, 7-17-18

On Tuesday, July 17, 2018, the Gurnee Fire Department received an emergency call regarding a fire at the famous Pyramid house located at 37921 N Dilleys Road in Wadsworth. The iconic golden pyramid-shaped structure, originally designed as a private residence in the 1970s, is a massive six-story building covering 17,000 square feet. Surrounded by Egyptian statues and a moat, the house is not just a local landmark but also a unique architectural marvel. According to reports from Chicago.cbslocal.com, the fire broke out around 4 p.m., quickly engulfing the premises in thick smoke and flames. The homeowner, an 80-year-old man with dementia who uses a wheelchair, was inside the house when the fire began. Thanks to the quick actions of his caregiver and fire officials, he was successfully evacuated without injury. Unfortunately, a beloved 15-year-old Yorkshire Terrier did not survive the blaze. The unusual design of the pyramid-shaped house posed significant challenges for firefighters attempting to extinguish the flames. A sudden wind-driven fire caused a dramatic explosion on the fourth floor, which one firefighter described as being hit by a blowtorch, knocking some crew members off their feet. Two firefighters sustained injuries during the rescue operation. Battalion Chief David Douglas of the Gurnee Fire Department noted that despite previous walkthroughs and awareness of the building's complexities, the actual firefighting experience proved even more challenging than anticipated. Attached below is a photograph taken by Tim Olk, capturing the intense scene during the incident. Additionally, there are multiple thumbnail images from the same event displayed in the gallery above, allowing you to view them individually or as part of a slideshow. While the fire has undoubtedly caused substantial damage to this architectural gem, the swift action of emergency responders ensured the safety of everyone involved, highlighting the bravery and skill of those working to protect our communities. This event serves as a reminder of both the importance of fire safety measures and the dedication of first responders who put themselves at risk daily to keep us safe.
