"Low-cost omnidirectional vision sensor for robots and demonstration applications"

On [China Instrument Network Instrument Development], the High-tech Division recently convened a panel of experts to evaluate the "Twelfth Five-Year" National Science and Technology Support Program titled "Low-cost Omnidirectional Vision Sensors for Robots and Demonstration Applications." The project, based in Ningbo, Zhejiang, was officially reviewed by the expert group. After listening to the project completion report, reviewing detailed documentation, and conducting on-site inspections, the team engaged in thorough discussions and questioning. Ultimately, they concluded that the project met its primary objectives and tasks, and approved its acceptance. ![Omnidirectional Vision Sensor](http://i.bosscdn.com/blog/63/68/80/935962379091652.png) Omnidirectional vision sensors, often referred to as panoramic cameras, are capable of capturing a full 360° horizontal field of view in a single image. These systems offer high measurement accuracy, non-contact operation, and flexibility, making them widely applicable in areas such as robotics, online inspection, product quality control, vibration testing, industrial analysis, and even physiological research. The National Science and Technology Support Project "Low-cost Omnidirectional Vision Sensors and Demonstration Applications," led by the Ningbo Institute of Materials, was officially launched on December 4, 2015. The main goal of the project was to develop cost-effective omnidirectional vision sensors tailored for home-based mobile robots. It aimed to create an integrated, compact, and affordable sensor system using MEMS technology, overcoming key challenges such as tilt correction, frame image registration, and image stitching. The project also aimed to implement no fewer than 100,000 units in home service mobile robots. Over several years, the team conducted extensive research, focusing on three-dimensional calibration of fisheye cameras using laser scanning, multi-image fusion and stitching, image stabilization via MEMS-based sensors, and color and brightness difference correction between different sensor images. They also developed algorithms for omnidirectional vision robot positioning and navigation, along with hardware systems like multi-camera optical path structures. As a result, they successfully created low-cost monocular and multi-directional omnidirectional vision sensors, including binocular, five-eye, and eight-eye systems, which were then applied in real-world scenarios. Currently, the project has been successfully deployed in applications such as balance vehicles and lawn mowing robots, enabling robots to capture real-time panoramic images of their surroundings and significantly enhancing their sensing capabilities. Moreover, through collaboration with industrial partners, the project has established production lines for multi-directional omnidirectional vision sensors. These systems have found wide use in public security, tourism, power, and other sectors, delivering substantial economic and social benefits.
